Outline

Individualism and the need to belong

The need for common purpose:

  • Colossians 1:28
    We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.
  • Acts 2:42–47
    42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 4344 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles.
  • Ephesians 4:4-5
    4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to one hope when you were called— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism;

Biblical Community is not an end in itself, it is the byproduct of a people filled with the Spirit and on mission with God.

Important questions to ask:

  • Is there a purpose in my life that is bigger than I can accomplish on my own?
  • Is there a higher value in life than just what I want?
  • Does my purpose in life require that I be in community with others?
  • What is God calling me to do?
